Although it’s often believed that rules are meant to be broken, especially when it comes to fashion, there are a handful of things that should never be done. Men’s fashion is built from tradition, meaning that there are a handful of ideals and values that must be adhered to. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to conform to fashion norms, but rather, the following can help you guarantee that you’re always looking stylish. So, what unwritten rules do you need to remember when it comes to styling yourself? These tips will keep you looking fresh for years on end.

Match Your Metals

First thing’s first, when it comes to wearing jewellery, you need to be sure to match your metals. Whether it’s watches, cufflinks, or men’s macrame bracelets, you need to ensure that your shades of metal match. You can’t be walking around with a silver chain and a gold tie clip, as this will clash and make it look like you threw your ensemble together. This isn’t the message that you want to convey on a day-to-day basis; instead, you want to look effortlessly put together. Matching your metals is one of the best ways to achieve this.

Match Your Leathers

Like your metals, you also need to be matching your leathers. This is possibly even more important than metals as they are even more noticeable. Your watch straps, wallets, belts, bags, and shoes should all be the same shade of leather, as this will completely tie any outfit together seamlessly. Even the most fashion forward will struggle to pull off black and brown together and this should be avoided at all costs. This is particularly important for plain outfits wherein your accessories act as statement pieces. Without these, your outfit will look plain and dull.

Don’t Wear Square-Toed Shoes

Square-toed shoes aren’t very fashion-forward when it comes to menswear. Not only are they uncomfortable, but they make feet look too long, resulting in an awkward appearance. On top of this, the angled shape means that they’re more prone to scuffing on the floor whilst you walk. After you’ve invested a significant amount of money in a quality leather show, the last thing you want to be doing is scuffing it along the floor. As well as this, this could cause the glue to come away at the sole, meaning that you’ll have to pay for shoe repairs.

Your Tie Should Be Darker Than Your Shirt

Another fashion rule to follow is that your tie should be darker than your shirt. If you don’t follow this rule, you’re likely to look like you’ve just stepped out of a 90’s boyband. Your tie should be the focal point of your outfit, and if it gets lost in your shirt, this can’t be possible. This can only be reversed if you’re wearing a black shirt, as you’ll struggle to find a darker colour than black. Despite this, it’s a good idea to steer away from something that is so strikingly different from the black, like a white. Grey is good middle ground for a black shirt.

Button the Right Buttons

Did you know that the bottom buttons of your suit jacket and waistcoat should always be undone? This is because when they’re done up, you’re restricted in your movement, and your jacket/waistcoat isn’t allowed to move freely. This can come off as awkward, which is something that you always want to avoid when portraying yourself. Instead, you want to come off as suave, sophisticated, and stylish.
